Do you need the CoreCAL on OVSES?

Hello,

For the first time in a few years I am putting my MS quote out to multiple sources and the question of CoreCAL's has come up. We have had them in the past and assumed you need them to cover the end users connecting to exchange, sql etc however one company is adamant we don't need them.

We use FTE and wonder if anyone can advise me with a yes or no? I assume you need them on your licence.

 

Although "give us a call and we will help" sales people are useful, I am really hoping I can get a clear yes or no on the forum from experience where possible.

Says to me CALs are a hard requirement unless someone can explain otherwise.

Think that depends what you're actually using as such, we use the FTE route so -

 

DsktpEdu ALNG LicSAPk OLV E 1Y Acdmc Ent

 

So the Edu Desktop pack includes Ent Cals, but if we didn't have that would need to buy Core Cal etc

You absolutely need CALs. Core CALs includes Windows Server CALs, Sharepoint Standard CAL, Exchange Standard CAL, SCCM Client Management License, and SCEP License. So, if you run any Windows Servers, you need a CAL for each client connecting (which under EES would be FTE count).

 

If you want SQL, this is licensed separately, and is not included in the Core CAL pack, or the Enterprise CAL pack even.

 

However, bear in mind that the Desktop Upgrade pack contains the Core CAL pack as a component.

Thanks. We purchase the DsktpEdu ALNG LicSAPk OLV 1Y Acdmc Ent also based on our FTE and one company claimed it included CALS but all I had to go on was sales people's word

My understanding is you need the CALs to cover what you said but am getting conflicting info saying its included in the DsktpEdu ALNG....

 

so confused. Its a couple of grand difference so need to be sure.

Indeed, we use the DsktpEdu ALNG LicSAPK OLV 1Y Acdmc Ent pack. It contains the CALs mentioned.

Are the two versions of Desktop Edu (long name versions)

 

My one above is the Ent version. SQL isn't included in any of them though.

What are you using? Is the answer to that

System Center Client Management Suite

 

(SQL/RDS etc are all seperate to any "core" solutions)

Ah yes, it would be for exchange, sharepoint and AD. My SQL and RDS are licensed separately.
