Hi,

Ok we have a school website (Our Main Website) where all our School Information ins displayed, policies ect, As this is a Wordpress Blog Staff are able to Blog on the Site, also but they have been uploading Images and Vidios and they are quite large, our uploads folder is 396Mb this is backed up every night.

A Teacher has asked if they can have the children blog on the website as they can just currentley comment, They want to uploads 100's of pics direct from the Ipad to the site. So rather thane upload them to the Main School website I have set up a subdomain and used that for the new Blogging website for the students to use, give the teacher access and given the pupils a generic email to log-in.

After days of nothing the teacher comes to me today as says she cant log-in.... I re-set the password and sent her an email back with the new password for the Students.

Thisafternoon I get an email still not working so I go to her room and Take a look... She is trying to log the students in on the School website and I said no thats not what you need to do you need to log in to here ... no she said xxx school have 1 blog and thats how I want it, I said thats fine but if the students are adding images it will get massive and The Back-ups won't cope, I am not being responsable for loss of data because it cant back up.

All she kept saying was xxx school has one blog on one website look ill show you... it went from their main website .org to a .co.uk dowmain I said they are using 2 website's, no she said the blogs on one, No I said, yes youre right they have 1 blog but the website and blog a separate.

 

Before I said something I shouldnt I came out of the room, (Wordpress and all being done in my own time! I was Mad)

I will speak with our -ICT Co-ordanator after school today and see what she says.

 

But any ideas would be great!

Ideas? None really. It makes total sense to have them on separate sites - having the students able to add stuff to your main school website is beyond crazy.

Hi Mark, I totally agree that you need to separate the students blogs out into a separate subdomain, thats what we do here because we could simply never put the reputation of the college at risk by allowing students to post on the main website.

 

That being said, I have a couple of ideas that might help you; if both your sites are Wordpress based you might be able to create a page on your main website and use something like an RSS feed plugin to pull in the most recent posts from your dedicated blog site. That way you'd still have the content "on" the main site, but the visitor would be (semi-transparently) taken to the other site when they click through to read a post.

 

A much more complicated (but completely transparent to the end user) way of doing things would be to use something like NGINX as a reverse proxy to direct requests for a particular directory on your main site to the other blog server, that way the two blogs would be physically separated on your backend, but from the outside world they'd appear as one site.
