Hi guys

I am looking for a free or low budjet way to do vdi as i want to give staff a way of accessing desktops outside of work

I am currently looking into qvd but was wondering if any one uses anything decent

Take a look at Redhat Enterprise Virtualisation (RHEV).

IIRC the supported version is about £700 per server per year. It is built around ovirt so you can roll your own unsupported version if you need to save money. You'll also need to get MS licenses for the VDI desktops if you want to run windows.

 

If you want just access to apps, and not full VDI - then Microsoft RDP with a Guacamole frontend for HTML5 access is a cost effective method. Again MS charge for the Terminal Server Licenses either per user or per client.

We use Ericom, really great product. Education pricing is also cheap. Well worth a look. We bought it through a partner Elmdale maintenance, very helpful and knowledgable on the product.

As cybernerd said MS RDP is the best and cost effective solution for accessing files remotely. There are apps available for almost every device from Microsoft. Licence is very cheap. Server can be setup on a VM within 2 hours but you need a SSL certificate.......
