As a K-12 School district, what legal responsibilities do we have when it comes to providing Wifi? Our current system provides a Guest-WIFI, guest username and password that the students, parents, and whomever can use for personal devices. We have opened up a BYOD SSID, and we allow students and teachers to bring in one device, registered through Airwatch to access it.

We wanted to shut down the Guest-Wifi, forcing staff and students to use the BYOD, giving us the ability to see who is using our system and for what. The powers that be gave us a hard No, in fact, they want the username and password to be removed from the Guest-Wifi, and to make it wide open. Are there any legal concerns in relation to this? We have a filter in place that covers all of our Wireless connections so I believe we are CIPA compliant, but do we need to be able to provide more than that?

No Password = No Encryption so traffic can be SNOOPED. Passwords and other sensetive data could be exposed.

In the UK there is no legislation as to what has to be provided. In a school if your providing access you should be at the very least filtering and logging access.

I would guess that e-rate and CIPA are the key pieces of legislation relevant to your question. If they require you to know 'who did what' then you have a strong case for pushing back on that request.
