Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone can recommend any general management or IT management certifications please? Have you done any? Is ITIL the only option? It would be nice if it was also on CBT Nuggets as I have a subscription.

Thanks

ITIL is the most recognised and widely used. Dont think the certs expire either so would be 1st port of call. Could compliment this with prince?

The cisco ccna course is good - if you are intending to configure switches/vlans/routers/firewalls. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it had immediate practical applications even though I don't use cisco switches (switch language seems to be roughly the same with just the odd variant).

The ITIL course, I think anyway, should be done by everyone who works in an IT helpdesk and by their managers as it sets out good practices and the reason for the practices in a surprisingly good way for something that got churned out by the cabinet office.

Those two courses (much more than any of the Apple and MS courses I've done) I consider to be some of the best use of my time outside of the office.

We use QA for most of our courses although we shop around with ITIL ones.

I have a CCNA (superseded by a CCNP). Its a purely technical certification, no management at all. Lots of people think its just Cisco but 80% of it applies to the whole of networking.

Do you have to take the official ITIL course to sit the exam?

Cool - so ccna as I need technical networking knowledge and the ITil , as my title is network manager , so I can confidently talk best practices .. I have been given the go ahead to enroll on any courses that I think will benefit - school is ( very lucky for me) big on cpd for all staff including support)

Any ITIL recommendations?

I've just done the ITIL foundation, it concentrates completely on how service desks work i.e. the process of calls coming in to resolution's. Its mind numbingly boring.

The ITIL Foundation cert/exam can be self-studied, anything above that you will have to attend an approved course.

I did the ITIL v3 Foundation exam, then I did the FITS level 4 & 5 (this was before the qualification was revised, now it's level 3 & 4). This is based on ITIL but aimed primarily for the education (however it can be applied to non-education sectors as well).

If you can find funding general management quals from the ILM are great, I did the NVQ 3 in Management - not a training course as such, but it does help with what you should be doing and point you in the right direction. There's also the higher education route, eg with the OU you have Technology Management, Management (general), etc...
