I don't know how many of you may have seen this yesterday: Google 'stores children's data' - civil liberties group - BBC News but it seems the EFF are claiming Google are using pupils data (browser and app data) from Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education for their own purposes.

Now, app data for product development I can understand but I do think they may be making a mountain out of a molehill especially given that browing data would be slurped on any other school based platform anyway.

I suppose the issue may be that the pupils may be identified via the app suite and Chromebooks.

Thoughts?

It is likely that the students are logging into a chrome book and other elements of GAE, so while adverts aren't being served within certain aspects of GAE, data gathered within GAE can be used to target ads when the user is outside of GAE. Given that in the UK we operate with Google as a data processor for the school and GAE is effectively part of our data processing, schools DP registrations are unlikely to cover this and, given that Google are not transparent about how they are processing the data, our registrations cannot possibly cover it.
