I have been asked to look at a system for our sixth form students to use when they need to leave the school site. Currently we have a book which does not work due to having multiple sites. I have been looking at some of the web based system which could have a couple of laptops or tablets with only that page displayed and the students can sign out/in which we could then access during a fire drill.

Has anyone already done this or use something similar? School are asking me to do it on a zero budget so fancy biometric readers or similar are out of the question.

We use LiveRegister, which reads data from most big MIS solutions and is quite easy to set up and for receptionists to manage. We've got 4 fingerprint readers to record attendance at our 6th form center and all they have to do is stick their finger on the reader to sign in, though I believe that they do offer other options (we have several students whom, for various reasons, can't use fingerprint scanners so they have pin codes to sign in with).

If, in time, you decide to go with them, they also do access control and cashless catering, though we've not gone this far with them.

We've had this solution for about a year now and are very happy with it.

We had smart card readers placed at various entrances around the school. It took less than a week before the system was crippled by the little darlings clogging the card swipes with chewing gum.

From experience, I wouldn't recommend anything that can be lost or stolen or any devices that have a hole or slot in them :) That's why we have finger print readers.

Our Governors objected to fingerprint readers when we were about to deploy it for our cashless catering solution (parental concerns about fingerprint data being recorded?)

Most the companies don't store fingerprints, it's a measurement between set points that's saved. No way to work out a fingerprint the other way around :) But guess it depends how concerned the parents were as to whether it's viable

I did say to the Head that the data would be no use for forensic identification but this fell on deaf ears.

Inventry would be ideal for this, you can put reads not much bigger than a CD in size and about 2" deep on the wall at the key doors and they can fob out. Can link to your MIS too.
