Simcfc73 Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Hi, Just had 4 laptops handed to me that have been in a bit of water. I stripped 2 down and the boards have a few burns on them. Has anyone managed to source replacements for the Samsung CBs? Looking online and they are mostly in the US of A. With shipping and tax it becomes almost the same as a new one.
CyberNerd Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 We've had a couple with water damage (not samsung). We've been able to salvage them *if* they've not been turned on, otherwise the boards need to be binned. If you have enough of them the damaged boards can be replaced with machines that get damaged screens so my advice would be just to hang onto the parts unless you are able to get one with a broken screen for a reasonable price on ebay.
difinity Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 That looks more like corrosion than a burn, gently clean the area with IPA and a toothbrush. There are people/companies out there that do component level repair. I've just repaired a Samsung laptop that wouldn't power on from the charger. Cost £1 for the component on a £120 motherboard.

A toothbrush won't dissolve in IPA, they are generally nylon. A brush that dissolved in IPA would also likely dissolve in an ethanol/water mix - not an ideal design for something you put in your mouth!

Boom boom ! do you party bookings ? Polypropeleyne or nylon brushes shouldn't be dissolved by IPA, maybe it was contaminated or mixed up with something else.
mikeprice Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 if the damage was caused by a water leak of similar then check if it is covered by insurance. We had some replaced a few years ago due to a leaky roof
Simcfc73 Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 Was caused by being left in a tray in science and 'accidentally' had a tap ran over them. One of them has that horrible battery acid stuff all over the usb connectors on the back too...
difinity Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 Was caused by being left in a tray in science and 'accidentally' had a tap ran over them. One of them has that horrible battery acid stuff all over the usb connectors on the back too... Easy enough to clean or replace the USB sockets. Not sure what the battery acid stuff is as there isn't any in laptops, more likely to be contaminants in the water i think or something that was in the bottom of the tray and splashed on the USB. I've revived a couple of dead motherboards just by giving them a good clean.
Simcfc73 Posted December 2, 2015 Author Posted December 2, 2015 So I have dismantled 4 and given them a good clean.. the stuff on the USB sockets looks like that stuff you get round car batteries when they leaked which is what I meant... has a very funny taste so don't lick it. First one I got to boot up but says the OS is missing.. tried the recovery USB but says there is an error. The worst bit of the 'burn' on the board seems to be in the ribbon for the trackpad... although I removed the plastic heatpad and another chip was covered in black stuff Second one doesn't show any lights when I plug in the charger, there is a bit of copper coloured metal showing next to the power connector on the board... not sure if its melted but I think that's the culprit. Third one is drying out but I think the battery connector is bad Revived the fourth one though, cleaned up the board and swapped the battery, the connectors on the battery and really black so will try and scrub all the crap out of them. 25% success rate so far.
difinity Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 You're still alive after licking the strange substance and 1 is working so that's a good start. The chromebook that gives the OS error, is it the one in your first photo ? as that is the tmp module. Unless it'd really cruddy i wouldn't suspect the battery connectors, it's more likely to be a shorted IC. MLCC are sensitive to water also and fail easily. If you want to take photos of any suspect areas i can try to help further. I can't find any schematics or boardviews but if you have a multimeter you can compare voltages etc with the working board to try and locate the dead parts. Ifixit teardown here if it helps if you haven't already found it. (i think this is your one)
