Just about to install the Deployment Server Database Installer, looks like it's selecting to install the SQL Server Compact Edition when SQL server 2012 is already installed on this server.

 

On on the phone to CapitaEs and the response is that is a requirement.....surely that cant be correct when I already have SQL installed!?

It's an entirely different thing, so yes you do need it. You're probably thinking of SQL Express rather than Compact - it used to be called something else but can't remember what!

Embedded? That was something else - single file db. Compact is only used for the deployment stuff if I remember correctly.
