In a school, it is much better (and more involving) to give a second kid a job, and let her/him do sound.

 

I'd be with you all the way in a show, be it amateur or pro, to have everything on a PC triggered by a "GO" button where ever you want. But school isn't the real world.

I used to work as a Performing Arts Technician in a school and when ever possible I would get the students to rig the sound, lights and run the stuff. We did one show where we hired the following and the kids operated it and programmed it.

 

Hired Lighting:

Can't disagree with you there! What I like to do is split the roles up, program as much as possible with the tech team, so they see the whole process and can dig things out of trouble if need be.

 

I keep seeing staff using YouTube for music for live events which terrifies me on a whole load of levels.

Sounds great. Which version of qlab would suit my needs (just to basically trigger sounds on cue changes)? While money is being planned for this project I'd like to get as much bought to future proof rather than going back to them in a few months asking for more.

 

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the free version of Qlab will do MIDI show control and play a single stereo channel of audio.

 

With regards to getting the pupils involved... if there were pupils wanting to get involved in the technical bits then that would be wonderful!

I think the free version of Qlab will do that as well, just don't have a mac to run it on.

 

As far as pupils wanting to get involved things seem to have dried up a bit here as well. Real shame.
