But you have 8 months to install that update. Having lots of laptops it would be quite a big job getting them out of trolleys to install the updates twice a year in each of our schools.

Have you tried installing it on one machine? It took probably over an hour, so yes, it would make more sense to re-image say every 12 months where possible.

I believe deferring updates is applicable to standalone or none managed networks - managed networks with WSUS will always take priority, so will ignore Windows Update for Business Settings.

It just means that for Windows 10 Education for example, Microsoft may/may not release security updates for build 10240 after 8 months, but only 10586 or later. For LTSB, you have up to 10 years to defer the upgrade, so Microsoft (in theory) would still release updates for 10240 or 10586 on LTSB.

It's still very unclear what their intentions are, but I think Microsoft need to distinguish better between feature packs and security packs and not mix the two.

Start menu still crashes, and start menu layout deployment fails. So they haven't fixed those two bugs yet.

Sorry, I meant Start tiles -which have never worked from Windows 8 onwards if you use GPO to manage them

Are you trying to deploy a pre-defined Start menu tile layout via. GPO? If so, what format did you use when exporting the Start Menu layout? I'm working off around 18 month old knowledge of how I did it with 8.1, but if I remember correctly you can export the layout as either an XML file or a binary BIN file. I think you need to use the binary format for deployment through Group Policy, so if you're exporting to XML then that might be your problem.

This is what the GPO Help section says:

Specifies the Start layout for users.

This setting lets you specify the Start layout for users and prevents them from changing its configuration. The Start layout you specify must be stored in an XML file that was generated by the Export-StartLayout PowerShell cmdlet.

To use this setting, you must first manually configure a device's Start layout to the desired look and feel. Once you are done, run the Export-StartLayout PowerShell cmdlet on that same device. The cmdlet will generate an XML file representing the layout you configured.

Once the XML file is generated and moved to the desired file path, type the fully qualified path and name of the XML file. You can type a local path, such as C:\StartLayouts\myLayout.xml or a UNC path, such as \\Server\Share\Layout.xml. If the specified file is not available when the user logs on, the layout won't be changed. Users cannot customize their Start screen while this setting is enabled.

If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the Start screen layout won't be changed and users will be able to customize it.

Not sure whether .BIN applies to Windows 10 or just Windows 8 or 8.1? If it's as simple as that, then why are Microsoft quoting .XML as the file extension?

Exactly, re-imaging laptops every 12 months isn't an option. This is why we have LTSB instead of the general release.

@Michael, when configuring the Start Menu is it the tiles that you configure, or do you have to do both the tiles as well as all of the programs under 'All Apps'?

No as you can disable/hide the All Apps using Group Policy. Do you think that's what's stopping the redirected Start Menu working? It's a theory I hadn't considered, but is disabled for all Pupils and Staff users.

Unlike the Windows 7 Start Menu, you can't (to the best of my knowledge), specify what Apps you want to appear on the Windows 10 Start Menu. I think it's all or nothing, unless someone knows otherwise?

It's a smaller time frame than I'd like, but then it's also a great way of getting large/clunky/old applications someone always ends up buying, with no deployable options. Imaging of course ticks lots of boxes and not just Windows and its enormous updates :)

I've ran the following:

Import-StartLayout –LayoutPath \\server\share\layoutmodification.xml -MountPath $env:SystemDrive\

File appears within:

C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Shell

Logon as existing and new Staff user, Start Menu is still blank.

Same as me, although the Start Menu is not blank, but it only shows some of the tiles. For example, I configured (as an admin) a layout that had tiles for the office suite, Internet Explorer, File Explorer, Calculator (just for testing!) and SIMS.

Deployed the layout, and when the user logs in, they got the office suite and File Explorer only. Buggy as hell.

did they have the shortcuts in their redirected start menu as well I found with 8.1 if you disabled the standard all users start and shoved say a tile for word there unless the start menu they have has the shortcut to word in it wont show
