Kevin Whately, who plays Inspector Robbie Lewis, and Laurence Fox, who plays DS James Hathaway, had "decided to retire" from the roles, ITV said.Lewis will come to an end after a two-part story that begins on Tuesday and concludes next week.

 

Whately has been playing Lewis for 30 years - first in Inspector Morse, then in his own show from 2005 following the death of Morse actor John Thaw.

 

Thaw died in 2002. Lewis, the spin-off that saw Whately's character promoted to Inspector, began in 2005...

 

I still prefer Inspector Morse. They began filming soon after I left Oxford. Watching the programs I used to give a commentary to Mrs P. as to where that location was, I was there, etc. Much to her annoyance.

We had them come and film at our school back in 2007. I was asked to be on site as they were using our ICT equipment. I turned up, sat behind the directors chair for 2 scenes then found out they were not using our kit after all, so watched even more from the back of the room. I got paid cash up front so sat around for 5 hours doing nothing apart from flick a fuse once.

 

Best Sunday ever and that money went towards our trip to Disneyland Paris.

 

It really gave an eye opener into the film industry, 5 minutes of filming takes about half a day to film.

I never really got into Lewis it was too different to Morse in my mind and I much preferred John Thaw in that anyway
