Are you talking about their legal requirements to work with enforcement agencies or are yu referring to a specific section in the T&Cs where they say something about sharing with commercial partners, etc?

So are you saying they will or won't do these actions? Have I misread a comment when it should have been taken as sarcasm?

 

If sarcasm then fine, but I get frustrated with people saying the T&Cs mean a certain thing and then fail to give evidence of it. Apologies if the frustration is wrongly expressed.

Bear in mind some of MS systems for detecting nudity etc. have been known to remove accounts without any comeback after acting on false positives. It's why I'd only ever use OneDrive as a backup location, never primary storage.

Basically MS are going to succeed in alienating customers who chose their service (and in some cases devices) based on OneDrive storage offers.

 

Effectively the message MS are giving is they don't value their long-term customers and seem quite happy to push them towards direct competitors... what a bizarre strategy (unless the end goal is to pull out of the consumer market entirely, which is what one of the writers in PC Pro predicted some years back)

I've just signed up with HubiC.com. 10TB of storage for £50pa. Pretty darn cheap. (If anyone else feels like signing up, I have a referral code: UPFNLC

 

Has its own application which will do daily/weekly/etc backups, as well as keeping them separate from your day to day data you keep synced up with it.

 

I like the look of it but had to read the T&Cs via google translate as they are in French. Presuming that this is a fault and there is a full English version, I'll give it a go. I've been looking for a decent app to help sync to cloud backup. I use to use LiveDrive but the MacOS App became so flaky that unless I rebooted once a week it would first hog all my memory and then throttle itself so that you could only upload about 50 meg a day!

Just out of interest, how is changed driven in your work place? Do you push the change? So do you roll out windows 10 first, then staff/students upgrade at home? Or is it the other way round? Do you upgrade because of staff/students? (Or option C your forced)

The perils of unlimited storage advertising, I have 40gb on my personal onedrive because of some legacy stuff I signed up for. my MS account has gone off a couple of times because my parents camera PVR dumps off images on motion detection to it via email which needed to be cleared out.

 

I laughed though when I read that some user had uploaded 77TB of data to their onedrive account on there, their going to have some more fun getting that data down from there.

This is always my concern in terms of Online Storage that they can do this, I've been thinking about using the free stuff for photos etc. Just so I always got a copy (course it doesn't bother me if they get hacked due to me not being stupid enough to take ... naked ones).

 

@localzuk I've heard about them, already been thinking about it. Wasn't too sure we could use it for School data? If we can for 50 euros a month that's an impressive price.

The OneDrive feedback page has already doubled in number of votes overnight, as I suspected quite a lot of Office 365, Surface and Lumia users all going to drop their MS services as a result of the decision.

 

Will be interesting to see MS response; will they stand firm or backtrack to try and dig themselves out of the hole they've created... Xbox One style?

Dont see why, Office 365 is a office suite, just happens to come with storage. Why would they devalue their office suite? Its best of bred, it would be like apple selling a macbook and giving away a imac with ever purchase.

 

If you really want storage, you can buy storage, its list price is £0.049, thats £50 odd per month for a TB of storage. Now the Office 355 will have to pay the azure guys for that storage, why would they pay £3,863.55 per month (before discount) so someone with a basic office suite subscription can backup their 77TB porn collection. Like others have said, beware the free services/add-ons, they are bound to disappear/get hacked. Much better to decouple your requirements - office365 for email/office, something else for actual storage storage (ie not your spreadsheets)

The biggest surprise about this, to me, is that people are surprised when the goalposts are moved! It may be wrong/immoral/whatever, but surely the endgame of cloud storage is to reel people in with great offers and then start charging extortionate prices once folk have gotten used to the convenience and don't want to switch back to local drives?

There's an online petition movement aimed at getting Microsoft to roll back some or all of its OneDrive changes. I hear that's not gonna happen.

In which case bye bye OneDrive, MS just set themselves right back to square one after doing so much good work recently.

 

Ironically the new OneDrive for Business UI appeared on our O365 tenancy this week; rather than have that (well overdue) good news as the highlight MS has all this negative publicity instead, great job guys!

 

The wider implication now is that MS can't be trusted to honour their terms for consumer or business products - that's much more damaging in the long run. When Google look trustworthy in comparison it says a lot about how this decision has come across.

I struggle to understand why they felt it was the right path to punish their entire user base against a small percentage of them probably behaving OTT, that being said, advertising it as unlimited was always going to ask for trouble, though capping it at 1TB isn't exactly tiny but I can understand some people average a lot more that that, outside of upping their dvd ripped movie collection to the web as this one guy supposedly has done.

Just to state - this does not effect Office 365 Education or Enterprise customers. Its only for people who are using Office 365 Personal and Uni. For all schools and users of Office 365 Education - you will still get OneDrive for Business Unlimited
