MattDLEA Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Someone on here must have done this. I am trying to kill two birds with one stone. Our current email is a bit of a mess we have [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Which is an absolute nightmare when trying to give out peoples emails. So we have had enough also the school.lea makes it a really long domain so we have purchased a school.org.uk ending . I have spoken to Google and we can add this new domain as a secondary domain then change it to be the primary domain. Has anyone done this and is there any thing to be careful of Cheers Matt

Ceegac Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 Hi Did you manage to change your primary domain? We have migrated all our email to Gmail from our Exchange server & changed mail records so that Gmail is now dealing with all our email... however, it won't let us change primary domain. Apparently this is not available for education without phoning google - when calling google we can't seem to speak to anyone who knows anything about how this might be possible. So now our email is working with our proper school domain, but on sign in everything still says 'managed by' the old domain (confusing for users & I suspect may have bigger implications!?) If anyone has been through this I would love to hear how you managed! Thanks Gayle
willtech Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 (edited) If you have chrome books you will need to contact support to deprovision then and move the licences. To remove a domain you will need to ensure that all every record does not have the old domain in. Especially aliases. Edited June 27, 2020 by willtech

According to the support article https://support.google.com/a/answer/7009324?hl=en If you have G Suite for Education, G Suite Education for Enterprise, G Suite for Nonprofits,Chrome Device Management, or Chromebox for Meetings, please contactG Suite supportfor your options. I think this just needs escalated if support haven't helped previously. Edited June 28, 2020 by gh5000

Just adding a second domain and changing it to primary. I think Google took this away to stop licensing getting abused in education.

To swap over to the new domain over should work and long as it has been added as a secondary domain not a domain Alias. Edited June 28, 2020 by willtech
Ceegac Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Thanks so much - and thanks for the PM - I've done as you suggested! That makes perfect sense that they have done that to prevent licensing abuse - and gives me hope that we can switch over to match up with our proper domain. We are trying to change to the official sch.uk domain so should be straightforward enough - for some reason the person who set up Gsuite did it on a totally different domain!
