Students get porn message after high school's email hacked | Stuff.co.nz Porn email sent to every student at Mt Albert Grammar - National - NZ Herald News High school lays police complaint over porn email | Radio New Zealand News Newspaper reports say "high school's email hacked", "someone hacked into the school's email database", "somehow got into the email database", etc. Sorry if any of the IT people at MAGS are EduGeekers, but am I the only one that reads this and thinks that this school probably left an internal "All Student" mailing list configured to be able to receive external emails and it's not a "hack" at all??!?

Phoenix_IT Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 couldn't agree more, the media use the term hack to make it sound more malicious than it was - spammers are getting better at 'guessing' distribution lists etc, heck if you've ever used rainbow tables for password cracking you'll know how much easier it all is; so i suspect you are right, more a case of a missed security setting 1

I've already screamed about this like this, just like the mistaken text messages sent to all parents "Your child is missing" which is NOT an IT Fault but by some idiot who sent it to every Parent. It's easy to blame IT becomes people believe it and let's face it, the general user has not got a clue.
