Oh... and go into your DHCP... right click server option for your scope and double check that ::1 hasn't been entered in the DNS server option - for both IPv4 and IPv6.

Also check that your PC hasn't got ::1 set for its DNS too.

THanks for the helpful posts.

Ok, I don't think scavenging is set up on the DC.

The error is on explorer:

resolve.png

I have double checked DHCP Server Options for both IPv4 and 6, and all tick options are unticked, with no DNS info on them. So it is all clear.

PC does not have any ::1 and have tried on multiple PCs just to be sure.

Try it logged in as Administrator. If not... No idea. Got to be DNS somewhere

Same problem, interestingly, I am finding the same thing happens if I try and access a classroom computer.

Firewalls are all disabled.

When you access by hostname, are you using the fqdn? If not can you try it?

I can't wrap my head around IPv6 much, but I do know that ::1 is the equivalent of 127.0.0.1 i.e. localhost. Just checking the output of ipconfig /all now and my PC doesn't have any IPv6 DNS servers showing up, even though it's set to automatically find one.

Something is definitely not right with your DNS, but I can't pinpoint what exactly. Definitely check for malware, as suggested above.

DNS option is not ticked, so no it is not there.

I have edited it and put in the following DHCP Server Options:

003 Router 10.75.44.1

006 DNS Servers 10.75.44.10 (FRDC server IP address)

015 DNS Domain Name stm.internal

I noticed also, that I am able to access the affected server from its self, if I type in: \\stm-sr-002 on \\stm-sr-002, the explorer opens with no problems or errors.

You need that ticked, and you need to provide it with your DNS server addresses.

Otherwise, no DNS server is provided to the client when obtaining an address from DHCP

015 - Not sure you really need that. I haven't. And is that your FQDN ?

Yes, that is our domain name.

The DNS server option has not been ticked since we set this server up, but the client machines have always had internet.

Its not really to do with the Internet. Internet DNS is handled by your ISP (configured on your router).

LAN DNS is handled by your DC. Thats where the problem is isn't it ?

Aha ok, that is good to know, yes this is a lan related issue.

Ok will reboot computers and see if this has made a change.

Sadly, the problem still exists, even with the new DNS settings in the DHCP settings area.

If I try and browse to our second server \\stm-sr-002 via its hostname rather than URL, I get the error:

Open Folder

\\stm-sr-002 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect.

If you run nslookup "server IP" what's it show?

Steve

If I type in nslookup affected server IP, I get this...

Server: Unknown

Address: 10.75.44.10

***UnKnown can't find 10.75.44.11: Non-existent domain

Silly question, but from your first pic in #7 do you actually have your second server with a host record? Shows the first one but can't see stm-sr-002 unless i'm being blind

Somethings messed up on your DNS for sure then.

What if you try it on the client?

Steve

I get the same if I type it on the client or the affected server or even the main frdc server.

And you added a A HOST record for the server? As couldn't see one in that pic on post #7

From memory, if you have devices with static IPs, you need to put in static A records for them otherwise scavenging can delete them.

A quick test would be to issue ipconfig /registerdns on the second server. It should start resolving correctly, but after the record goes stale and scavenging runs, the record will be lost.

A manual A record and associated reverse entry should solve your problem.

Hi, yes there does seem to be one (DNS>STM-SR-001>Forward Lookup Zones>stm.internal):

stm-sr-002 Host (A) 10.75.44.72 04/08/2015

However, there are inconsistencies with it.

The IP address or "data" field shows 10.75.44.72 but that is wrong. The IP is 10.75.44.11

This is a statically assigned address, however the Timestamp does not say this like it does on the frdc.

Looks like the server took a DHCP based address originally, and that record still exists (Guessing that's what the other machine IP is?)

Put the proper IP back as a static record for that HOST. (Also check you aren't giving out the static range of IP addresses)

And then re-clear cache etc and try it

Ok, I have done that:

C:\Users\administrator.STM>ipconfig /registerdns

Windows IP Configuration

Registration of the DNS resource records for all adapters of this computer has b

een initiated. Any errors will be reported in the Event Viewer in 15 minutes.

There is another host on the network with that name.

Another host on the network with the same stm-sr-002??

Can't be? As I set it up.
