Hi All,

I am installing SQL 2012 Express on a test machine so I can restore a SIMs backup to.

Question - where do I find DBAttach to install? Does anyone know which product it is installed under?

Thanks

Kind regards

I think it's SIMSSQLApplicationSetup if I remember rightly. :)

If you use SIMSInst and tell it your installing an SQLServer it will install all the needed bits and SQLExpress2012 for you providing you SIMS\Setups directory is up to date.

You can't just use dbattach. It's installed as part of the SIMS server install. When installed it is usually on the C drive, or whereever SQL is installed, in the Program Files, SQL, MSSQL.10, binn folder.

To create this you need to run an installable release of SIMS. You can download a copy from Capita's MyAccount - a recent thread discussed where the links are. This should install SQL Express in the process if you don't already have SQL installed.

Next you'd want to run updates that have been released since that release to bring the setup to the same version as your current data. At that point restore a backup using dbattach, or you can just do a restore using management studio, though you don't have that with Express.

Run SIMSSQLApplicationSetup. At this point you can choose where to install in to. You need to point this to the Binn folder of the new 2012 instance you have just installed. Run dbattach from that folder once its done. You can alternatively install it to a temp folder location and just copy the contents to the Binn folder afterwards.

Thank you all for your replies.

Has anyone gone through the steps of performing this setup? If so would they like to share their experiences and how they overcome login problem - reset sysman password etc....

Thanks

You should use the SA password to attach the DB. After that use your regular user/pass to login. You can also use the restore option from a .bak file.

It's my thread that was referenced by @vikpaw and yes I have litterally just done this.

You should ensure that your backup is transfering the logins to the database and then when you restore your backup the usernames/passwords should all be the same. If you use the latest full SIMS Installable ISO and then the latest SIMS update ISO corresponding to the version of your server and then run SIMSInst from what is effectively your new Setups folder on your new S drive and tell it to install a new SIMS Client and SIMS Server. Follow SIMSinst through and when it asks about your database, say you will restore one later.

Complete the installation and then run DBAttach using the new SA username/password and restore the database backup from your existing server back to it. the only issue I had for some reason (and it might have been to do with the order I did something) was dbattach didn't run correctly at first. Manually rerunning the SIMSSQLApplicationSetup file to reinstall the dbutils fixed that though.

Don't forget to alter the DMS location to your new dummy server in the DMS setup part of SIMS (I tend to install DMS but just not restore the files unless I'm looking at something inparticular that requires it).
