I have a 100mb virgin line and the following devices 3 iPhones 4 apple TVs 3 iPads 2 Mac minis 1 MacBook Xbox 360 Wii u House is a traditional 1930s 3 bed semi. I'm thinking of just getting the latest AirPort Extreme but would like other opinions please

steveking Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I have a unifi ubiquiti at home, and it's been almost flawless. I've had it about 18 months, and got it for £50ish from Amazon. UniFi: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories It has much better signal than any home wap I've tried over the years (and there have been many), and even reaches to the back of my yard with full signal. It's got it's own PoE injector so I've just run a flat cat5 cable to where it's mounted and it looks ok on a wall, most people think it's just a large smoke alarm. The controller software is neat too, I run it on my home Linux server. It only has a 100mbit lan to it, but if you want faster the pro versions have gig ethernet and they also use proper PoE if you have that already. I think there are some new square models out now.

Currently have virgin media broadband going into a router and then from there 3 netgear ap's. the setup works but issue is when moving around the house. the devices drop connection and then re-connects after a few seconds to the next ap. i have been reading up on ubiquiti stuff for last yfew weeks and decided to go with their unifi ap-ac lite model. theres no drop in wifi connection when moving about the house and also lets you have a separate guest network which is handy as we have a family business and have staff that currently connect to our wifi which i dont like.
rich_tech Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I wish there was a way to get the SuperHub2 for free, I am stuck on a V1 here and it works "ok", but the wifi is not brilliant, which is why I was thinking Airport and Modem Mode would be a lot better.
steveking Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I have a guest (openwireless) network running on mine, and it works nicely. I've limited the traffic so that I don't notice it and isolated it from my network. I did play around with portal pages they were annoying so that's disabled now. That was all done with the web interface, it's pretty simple. You can also see the MAC and hostnames of any users/guests and how much traffic they've used and for how long they were connected. One of the reasons I went for unifi was so that I could have zero handoff between APs as I was getting annoyed going between two APs with clients, but as one AP covers my whole house I haven't had the need to buy a second one.

But my house doesn't have a gigabit LAN yet anyway and I haven't had a problem with speed or contention on the 2.4GHz channels. Just for info, you don't need to have the controller running all the time unless you want to run a captive portal. You can just set up the SSIDs and forget if you like - no need for a permanently on PC at home.

steveking Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I don't have VLANs at home, so not sure if it works... but inside the WLAN options is a VLAN setting, and as that's a setting per SSID I assume it'd work. 1
XiJ Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Moved I to this new build house 18 months ago and planned to run Cat6 around and install a unifi standard AP But the virgin superhub2 provided such great signal coverage and high speed 5ghz in the living room and my home office/man cave that I haven't bothered yet. That said, the new Unifi AC Access points look good value - so will probably get the cable run in an mount an AP somewhere (they are also smaller than the originals)

m25man Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 The UAP AC lite is only 2x2 mimo on both bands. Also both the lite and LR are not .af compliant, they are both 24v passive. These devices will replace the existing UAP Std and LR as the entry point devices to the Unifi range and are priced accordingly. They do have a gigabit port, but be aware this is not backwards compatible with the existing 24v passive injectors or 24v 10/100 midspans. You will need to pay attention to this when integrating the new UAP range into existing environments.
