Azure AD - Assigning Apps

Hi all,

 

Am I right in thinking that the free Azure AD does not allow you to mass assign applications to users? We've just moved our Google Apps logons to authenticate against our AzureAD (which mirrors our LEA one - but not quite there with ADFS yet).

 

I need to assign permissions to all the users in Azure but at the moment have to choose around 20 at a time in the Azure Management Window. It's a pain.

 

Any idea how I can just assign to everyone?

I've not done it myself, but in this situation the answer is usually powershell.

It would seem that Microsoft is intending to "encourage" people/organization to move to the paid Premium Azure services to obtain the ability to assign users by groups or in mass.

Microsoft also ripping off education with Azure AD Premium and charging per user rather than FTE. If that's their game going forward (thinking of the "Cloud Transition" agreement) then they'll be losing a lot of customers.

 

I wanted to use Azure AD Premium for password self-service, Azure apps, EMS and so on but when our entire EES is just over £20k per year there's no way we're paying £10k / year to add Azure AD Premium at £1 per user!

 

Lost count of the times I've complained to MS about this but still no movement on the pricing as far as I'm aware, which is very disappointing.

In the meantime iamcloud are pricing more sensibly and include some other nice goodies so that route is looking appealing as an alternative.

The free AZURE does what we need so far, except that I want to be able to assign "Google Apps" to everyone in my organization (about 4,000 people), but I can only do it to 20 users at a time...NO WAY that is a feasible option! It's rediculous. MS already gives us FREE Office 365, how much could it cost them to add and "All Users" option when selecting which users to assign an app?

The cynical part of me suggests that's exactly why they built it that way, similar to how our free Azure AD lets users request a password reset but won't let it write back to a federated AD without Premium (and £££)

I also got a quote for azure ad premium.

 

I agree it should be free to schools already taking advantage of the enterprise-grade features made affordable for schools running on-prem, much of it is basic functionality you'd expect in an on-prem service.

 

That said it was a lot less than 10k on an OVS-EES of a similar size to the one mentioned above?

Depends on your user count. We have 470 FTE but 10k accounts provisioned so to license them all... ouch.

Yup got it in one!

 

What's even more stupid is the InTune section of EMS pack is licensed by FTE (free for students) so within the same offer you have two different licensing models.

Another example of multi national software companies not realising that our pupils are their future. If we had free Azure Premium and it was a positive experience we would be pushing it to our kids to use outside of school etc Yes I know there are free pupil offerings through DreamSpark but it doesn't help schools.
