Looked after children, laptops and licensing

What do other people do regards buying laptops for looked after children? We've been asked to buy some for our looked after students out of their pupil premium money which is fine but I want to check a couple of things:

 

1. I am planning on buying a refurbished laptop for them, no point in wasting money, there is no issue with this is there?
   
2. I'm thinking that we can't install a Windows OS and MS Office using school MAKs because the student won't be an employee, therefore they would have to pay for it out of the PP money as well?
   
3. The laptop once bought is the property of the student and therefore the responsibility to maintain/look after it is also on the student (or more likely their guardian)?
   

 

I've always found Pupil Premium money in schools to be a bit of a grey area, sometimes they aren't very clear about where it is spent etc. and are challenged by OFSTED as a result.

Just use the key on the machine to activate, obviously if they connect to the server, it'll need a CAL.

 

And in regards to office, I'm fairly sure that if you have volume licence and 365 the pupil is entitled to the full office suite anyway

We are having to do the same : 1) I don't see an issue, refurbished units represent excellent value so why not. 2) Not covered on our volume licence but I'm recommending a clean install using Windows grabbed from Dreamspark and office from 365. 3) Yes, we will not offer support for it as such.

Alot of refurb's come with OEM license of Windows, why not chuck OpenOffice/Libre office, set the defaults to .doc .xls etc and away you go.

2) Correct, If you are using OVS-ES then an individually assigned student device may not be covered, unless you add it additionally with the student licensing. Only pooled student devices are covered with the base FTE count. I don't believe it is terribly expensive however.

 

Although you can activate and install using the volume media if it's a Pro license iirc, you just don't get a license.

Thanks peeps, going to go for the Open Office solution for now, the refurb unit looks like it comes with a W7 Pro COA anyway so thats covered.
