mikeprice Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Help!! Just setting up a new PC - everything Ok and just connected it to the domain Realised that Windows needs to be activated so tried - get an error saying DNS Name does not exist Dns is working fine - can get onto WWW fine Any clues where to look would be gratefully received as I need to get this PC into a classroom tomorrow first thing!! TIA Mike p.s. I may be being thick - it's been a long day!
3s-gtech Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 At a guess, you have a KMS key installed and it's looking for your KMS address via DNS. Do you have a KMS?
mikeprice Posted September 30, 2015 Author Posted September 30, 2015 no - everything else has activated OK from the same everything
mrwoberts Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Do you have any filtering in place that may be blocking the lookup? Try manually setting your DNS to: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 then ipconfig /flushdns reboot and try again. 1
mikeprice Posted October 1, 2015 Author Posted October 1, 2015 OK - problem sorted I spent half of yesterday evening looking up stuff on WWW - no wiser this morning - it should be OK Checked this morning and the License is MAK not KMS - documentations says that entering a MAK key should stop it trying to activate using KMS but it didn't Running SLMGR seemd to be OK but at the bottom it said to run slmgr /ato - so I did (blindly - dunno what it did really) Then out of desparation I just re-entered the product key Which then activated fine I hate problems that just go away - I always suspect they will come back at a more inconvenient time! Thanks to all who replied Mike
