I've had an idea that students could use some sort of web based tool to select a file they want to send to a member of staff (homework etc) and then select the staff name from a dropdown list and click send, and the email is automatically send to the teacher. It removes the problem of staff not wanting students to know their email address.

Anyone done anything like this?

I created an ASP system to do this about a year ago. It's a bit of a quick and dirty solution, it also allows staff to hand back work. It uses a folder system behind it all, and the script uploads to this and then sends a message to the teacher selected. Uses their logon name to choose which folder to upload and to tell the teacher who it was. This does mean authentication has to be on the web server.

EDIT: This is used as we haven't implement a VLE yet and a teacher wanted to use it. It has since been adopted by more teachers and we are hoping that this will lead to a good take up of a VLE when it is.

We use mambo which could be used for authentication as this has an SQL table with usernames and emails.

Techmonkeys idea sounds good - could I have a look?

We are using Ranger Outpost at our school, which seems to be working quite well.

For students sending files to staff from outside school it will be done on our VLE. if it is internal, all students can see a staff members folder (but cant go into them!) they can then paste the work onto the folder which drops it into that staff members area. Only had a single case of misuse which we were able to catch by the creator/owner of the file as it hadnt been opened by the member of staff, thus catching them red handed.
