Won't allow logon without a password

So I'm in a primary and just messing about with a windows 10 image, but there is one issue. It won't let a user logon without a password.

 

I've had a real quick glance at GPO's but can't see anything blindingly obvious.

 

I've put a password on my pupil test account and it logs me in. Take the password off and it says incorrect username or password.

 

The younger kids can barely type in their username, let alone a password too.

 

Any pointers?

I'm not sure if Windows 10 won't allow you to have a blank password... However, are you on the right domain function level? Imported the latest Windows 10 Admin Templates?

If users have to have passwords to log on, it could be a big fat no on using this OS

 

There is always a way around it though isn't there?

I have seen on other forums people saying they can't seem to have a blank password with Windows 10, unless there is a hidden object in GPO....

 

Would be interesting to know if you can get users to use a PIN, but that maybe only a Microsoft Account thing.

 

Win10 is a no go for us at the moment due to some settings frustrating us.

If they're class machines you might be able to set them to log in automatically on boot.

I was thinking of getting it on laptop trolleys... hmmmm. Just had a mare trying to sysprep the thing.

We have just begun the process to support Windows 10. I created a Windows 10 x64 Enterprise image by installing to a VM on my Hyper-V VM, installed Windows Updates, and ran sysprep. In my testing I have had no issues using generic domain accounts that have no password (they are used in computer labs where currently our Windows 8.1 PC's autologon).

 

Just for fun I also created a local account with no password and that also works fine. Not sure why it isn't working for you. I haven't changed any of our group policies. I would suggest you perform a "gpresult /r" on one of those machines to see which GPO's are being applied and which ones it might be having issues with.

 

FYI, our Forest and Domain functional level is Server 2012.

My DC is Server 2008 R2 and I wonder if this is why I am running into issues.

 

I've installed Windows 10 Education on a hyper-v VM, installed all of our software, updates and then sysprep bombs out with a failure. Reverted back to the pre-sysprep snapshot and it still fails. I thought it might have failed the first time because I put it in audit mode to change some settings.

 

I'll check group policy, the LA support at the time who set up the server have some funky settings on there!!

Offtopic, but I remember our old SIMS server which the LA provided (before we left the LA) had 8GB of ram on a 32bit OS. LOL!

 

 

Ontopic, you say sysprep fails? Maybe a broken install???

What switches are you using? Running sysprep directly or from CMD?

I go to C:\Windows\System32\sysprep and run sysprep.exe then I've tried audit mode and then OOBE and checked generalise - what I've always done with Windows 7. Lemme run it now and get you the exact error message...

 

I should add I'm logged on as an administrator. Also, I've not activated Windows... this won't have anything to do with it will it?

might be worth whacking PersistAllDeviceInstalls ​in the sysprep xml file?

Search regedit for the following entry: DeviceMetadataServiceURL

change the URL to the following: http://dmd.metaservices.microsoft.com/dms/metadata.svc

 

 

Then reboot and try again....

it you dont generalize it does it not keep all the existing sids making it useless for anything other than a straight restore to that one system?

Now to solve the blank password conundrum...

 

I checked the group policies being applied. It says default domain is being applied... and in my default domain policy we have...

I thought it stripped drivers and yes... SIDs. It's ok, I'll look into the XML file later.

 

I definitely need it working for users without a password though... love a bit of brainstorming in the morning!

unfortunately not. My only option currently is to put passwords on the accounts. I'm still looking into it, just when I've got time :-/

sysprep by DEFALT strips drivers but can be told not to

If possible can you try the new build (if you have access to it) and let me know if it continues to fail in TH2 Build
