Trapper Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Just posting this here to see anyone else has had a problem with this. We're an all-age special, but the quote for Smoothwall with a server came in at over £8000! Now my finance team balked at this, and they want to fill the eSafety gap using Policy Central via the LEA. That only costs £600 a year. I've used PC before and it can be awful. Has anyone managed to get Smoothwall down a bit with the costs?
caffrey Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 (edited) Is that for a year or 3 ? If it's for 3 that's not too bad. You could always use your own hardware and just get a licence Edited September 19, 2015 by caffrey
rrrrr Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 For 3 years thats cheep. We payed around £11k for 3yrs/1200 students. That included a master and failover box. We scrapped smoothwall 2 yrs ago for sophos utm. Sophos is a more feature rich and stable solution and a similar price.
caffrey Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Something really wrong with mine then, I only pay for the iso (my own hardware) with 500 licences at 2.5k a year + vat .... for 3 years it's 8480+vat... and I've been a customer for years....

That is about right if i remove the 2x appliances 1x installation from my old quote. Sophos also supported 10gbps and full SSD storage which at the time smoothwall didnt Edited September 19, 2015 by rrrrr
forkies Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 We just purchased a S8 UTM appliance for 1000 users. Came in at about £10,500 for 3.5 years (they offered us to run side by side with current solution and get that time added for free to end of contract). This is a similar price to our current solution watch guard xtm850.

Its not as if many schools are likely to have 10Gbps internet connections any time soon...

Trapper Posted September 21, 2015 Author Posted September 21, 2015 All age special with only 150ish kids on role. The price was for the lump of iron, the installation and configuration and the ongoing support and list updates. As we are all age is looks like we got the price point for secondary - we just do not have £10k spare now. Even if we did it would be spent on migrating from Facility CMIS to SIMs
caffrey Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Filtering solutions are expensive, most of them are more than half of my yearly budget so I can't easily enter into a 3 year contract and have to negotiate yearly ones (which end up costing more) When I take it to the board they usually baulk at the cost! Don't suppose anyone has a good pfsense / dnsguardian / ad integration guide handy ?

As you only have a small network this may be worth looking into. http://Http://Www.smoothwall.org https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-utm-home-edition.aspx

Do Smoothwall just have a fixed price point for secondary schools rather than adjusting their prices by number of users?

As you only have a small network this may be worth looking into. http://Http://Www.smoothwall.org https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-utm-home-edition.aspx Worth pointing out that the Smoothwall Open Source community product is not supported by or related to the commercial product (the Open Source project is on a very different code base IIRC), so if you were using the Open Source product, you would be limited to support in the OS community. You can't ask Smoothwall Commercial to support it.
Jose Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Try Untangle https://www.untangle.com/shop/public-sector-complete works out at 720 GDP per year for 150 devices, includes live support.
Trapper Posted September 25, 2015 Author Posted September 25, 2015 Anyone know why SW Express as a second proxy is slow. I mean very, very slow with only me connecting through it. It is Hyper-V on Win 10, but has 4 cores, 3.5GHz, 4GB RAM. Two virtual legacy NICs on a 100Mbps LAN connection on the host. Any ideas?
Edu-IT Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 You may want to consider Lightspeed too, if Smoothwall isn't in your price range.
xenonive Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Could be worth contacting http://www.emeiatec.com as they are offering free iboss hardware at moment. Might help bring the costs down when changing appliances. 1
caffrey Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Our renewal came up and it's more expensive due to moving to a per user rather than a per device licence, it's also buy 2 year get the 3rd free, but I don't like entering long term contracts (cost etc.) and one year contracts for some reason are more expensive.
Opendium_Steve Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 You may want to consider Lightspeed too, if Smoothwall isn't in your price range. How do the Smoothwall and Lightspeed prices compare? I was always under the impression that LS was the more expensive of the two?
jmcdermott Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 I am using a VM on my server running ubuntu server + diladele filtering, 1000 concurrent users across as many sites as I can setup servers 500 euros per year. been running for about 4 years with no problems, reporting could be a little better.
maark Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 If you could do filtering separately net support dna provides good safeguarding stuff such as screenshots of flagged words etc. and might work out cheaper
