EdExcel Promissor Enterprise SiteManager - server without IIS needed?

I've just sat down to install this for the first time. The installation guide says gives among the pre-installation tasks:

 

Ensure that IIS in NOT running on the machine. This does need to be installed on a server machine.

 

Is that essential? I don't have a server (Server 2003) that isn't running IIS. It's a bit vague, but by 'server machine' does it really mean Server 2000/2003 or will XP do?

 

What problems would Server 2003 with IIS cause anyway?

 

My first instinct is to install create a VM running XP Pro and install it on that. I'll see how it goes.

 

Any suggestions?

It doesn't need to run on a server for the ESM, it runs fine on a desktop.

 

The server-side is simply a file server so even samba will do. The entire program is misleading- especially in a thin client environment when (the administrator is the client that gets installed on the server for the kids whilst the ESM is the servier that is installed on a client for the administrator????)

Depends on how many clients connecting to it I suppose and if you'll hit the XP limit.

 

It will install on a machine with IIS as long as you don't have any sites on port 80 as the program needs to use it for itself.

I thought the client software (the administrator program) only talk to the file-server - not the ESM, hence it was ok to install the ESM on an XP as long as teh file server was on a samba/NT server. Can someone confirm ?

Thanks for that - I'm setting up a VM with XP now for the server (or SiteManager as they call it). You're right about the confusing terminology. The client is called administrator.

I just set this up the other day on a Windows 2000 Server with out the IIS installed worked ok if you have anty problem post will try to help

I've just sat down to install this too and whenever I try and start the ESM server it says "error 18, connection to port 80 makes sure IIS is not running". IIS is not running in services
