Intel Graphics Drivers - "Maintain Display Scaling"

We have deployed a number of new Windows 8.1 machines across the site and also replaced a lot of 4:3 monitors with 16:9 ones. We previously used VGA splitters for the monitor and projector, though have now removed these in favour of using the dual output on the machine. The machines have 1x VGA and 1x Display Port outputs. The monitor is connected via VGA and the projector is connected via DP (using a DP to VGA adapter). There are different sized 16:9 monitors across the site, though the projectors are stuck at 4:3 1024x768.

 

A lot of the staff don't currently understand extended display and simply want to duplicate the display. When we do this, it is forced to 1024x768 to match the projector, leaving large black bars down the left and right hand sides of the screen as the monitor displays at 1024x768 too.

 

The machines have Intel HD4600 onboard graphics, and they have an option within the properties called "Maintain Display Scaling". When this option is selected for the monitor, the black bars are removed as it is scaled to the screen size.

 

I currently cannot find if there could be a way of pushing this out to all of our affected clients. Can anybody help, or provide a possible solution? Extended desktop is obviously the ideal solution, though it will take us a while to get staff on board with it.

When you say it is scaled to the screen size, do you mean that it stretches the image to fill the space? This typically looks absolutely awful, far worse than black bars.

 

Ideal solution is widescreen projectors, at least in terms of your next round of replacements or any odd swap outs (we did this with our last refresh). Personally, I would either leave 4:3 monitors for those staff that want a cloned display, or keep the black bars.

I have a similar but different problem.

 

I have 4:3 projector and 16:9 monitor. I WANT it to expand on the monitor but stay as 1024x768 on projector.

 

When I choose maintain aspect ratio the monitor has the black bars and the projected image is ok. If I dont choose maintain aspect ratio the monitor is filled by the projector display is smaller and is harder to read text. I have resetthe projector back to factory setting as I thought it was a setting on the projector that they had messed with.

 

Guess i'll have to check what flashes up as the detected resolution on the projector when not in maintain aspect ratio mode as i'm not convinced the vga port is outputting 1024x768.

 

Will laso have to fiddle with monitor to see if it will strech the 1024x768.

 

The teacher has poor vision and needs as big an image as possible on monitor. They have 19" 16:9 samsung monitor. Every other class has a 4:3 monitor so ther is no problem.
