Desktop Icons Disappear after Remote Desktop

Have recently upgraded my work PC from Windows 7 to 8.1 and everything as hunky dory!

However, I regularly remote into my PC across the network to access various programs for troubleshooting.

I also remote desktop into work PC Via VPN from home.

 

I've noticed on several occasions now that after a while, and I remote in, I get the taskbar showing all open programs, but the desktop appears blank and all shortcuts etc have disappeared, it's totally blank. The next time I go back to the physical PC and unlock it, the icons are still missing.

 

The only way I can get them to return is to log off and back on the physical machine or reboot to bring back on a remote desktop connection.

 

If you go to C:\users\%username%\desktop then they're still there.

 

Anyone else ever seen this?
