[ms office - 2013] Excel stuck on "processing"

We have a problem where users try to open spreadsheets, can be any spreadsheet and Excel 2013 will sit at the green splash screen with "processing" in the bottom left but never open the file. If you open excel and then open files its fine. As I said its not one particular spreadsheet file that I can pinpoint it to.

 

Happens when exporting from SIMS too but I have another thread on that one in the MIS forum.

Might not be related at all but, I had a similar issue with my laptop however it only happened when i was off site.

 

Mr Google suggested that maybe Excel was trying to locate my default printer so it could determine margins etc but as i wasn't connected to the network it couldn't find them etc. So i changed my default printer and TA DA! no more issues.

No unfortunately not. Tried changing default printers but still no joy.

Had a few users report this, you are not alone!

 

Haven't had a proper investigate yet but will report back once I do.

Try this, it's solved the same problem for me

Specifically, this article (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3066990 )regarding Excel 2013’s memory usage which mentions

“Although improvements in Office 2013 did not significantly affect system requirements, Office 2013 does use more available system resources than Office 2010 did. The limit of virtual address space for 32-bit editions of Windows-based applications is 2 gigabytes (GB). For Excel 2013, this space is shared by the Excel application itself together with any add-ins that run in the same process. The size of the worksheet itself also affects the usage of virtual address space. Because Excel loads the worksheet into addressable memory, some worksheets that have a file size of less than 2 GB may still require Excel to use more than 2 GB of addressable memory. This situation results in the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section”

 

I used this workaround;

Disable hardware graphics acceleration. This shuts off animations. To do this, on the File Menu in Excel click Options, click Advanced, click Display, and then select Disable hardware graphics acceleration.

Plus I also did this;

1. Click File > Options > Add-Ins.

2. Make sure COM Add-ins is selected in the Manage box, and click Go.

3. In the COM Add-Ins box, untick SmartLink or any other addins not required.

@ChickenDhansak - I forgot to update this thread. I did the untick SmartInk COM add-In and it worked for us.
