No Management IP Address on Core and Edge Switches

We had a power cut several months ago and when all the switches came back up i have noticed i cant get to them via their manually assigned IP address. So i though they might just need a reboot, i rebooted (and also left off for a while) one of the offending edge switches (that didnt have any nodes on) and then plugged it back in. Still didn't get an IP. It had not even resorted to a dynamicaly assigned IP.

Is it going to be a case of rebooting the core switches first for the others to recieve one?. (All these switches are connected in to the 2 core switches).

Is there another way of accessing these without having to just power cycle them?

What make/model are they? Many HP models are swine for this, as you have to save the running config to the boot config separately or they reboot back to default settings (including DHCP assigned address).

 

You say it didn't get a dynamically assigned address - how did you check? Console?

You'll probably be able to access them using a console cable and PuTTY or minicom; configure the address and save the running config.

Are the switches vlaned? If so Have they remembered the vlan config still?

It sounds like they have lost their running config where it was not saved, and either reverted to a previous config or gone back to factory defaults.

If you can get into your core switch, you can do a cdp neighbors command that will tell you the ip addresses of all the managed switches connected to it.

 

If it is a fully managed switch. You will need to do as cybernerd said and connect by console cable and reassign the switches ip to the management vlan. If its a web managed switch, you can try connecting to 192.168.2.10 (set your computers ip manually to same range first then plugging in directly) or it will be a factory reset job.

By default, most switches dont get an ip address by dhcp, you would need to set this if you wanted to use this

many thanks for the repies, the switches are HP v1910s and 3Com 2950. 1 Switch is Vlanned and still works fine.

Yes they are Web managed switches. So the best way would be to console into the switch and assign the ip that way?

I checked by scanning a range of IP addresses (using an IP scanner) that i have used for all the switches. (which would pick up all manually and dynamically assigned addresses), it found a few switches in other cabinet around school but none of the others.

Yeah console to the switch, manually change ip then make sure you save the config!
