Daily detentions advice

Hi, my school uses SIMS for behaviour management but until now we have not used it for detentions. We are about to start though and I have a question which I'm hoping someone can answer, give advice on.

 

Creating detentions and the system behind it is not a problem, all working well. However part of our policy is that for low level disruption or similar, missed homework etc the student will serve a 20 min detention with the class teacher at their description - usually at lunch or after school.

 

SLT want these logged on SIMS. However this means potentially creating 10 active detentions for each staff member per week! That seems excessive to me and maybe confusing for our move over.

 

Has anyone used a different approach or streamlined this kind of thing anyway.

We create a single detention per day for all staff, which they add pupils to. It shows the staff member who added it, so you can tell who it was with. We've also got a second detention to catch those pupils who skip the first. I pre-create them at the beginning of the academic year (must remember to do this!)

Ah nice one. That's great advice. Did you find any glitches in terms of providing SIMS with location or did you just select a particular classroom?

We created a new classroom called 'Detention', just as a generic space filler. It's known that staff will hold their 'teacher' detentions in their own classrooms so the location didn't need to be recorded.

When you add behaviour incidents you can add the action taken (in the pop-up window where you confirm the name) and who actioned it. Is that not the best place or is the data a little hard too extract this way?

 

In my experience staff are good at adding behaviour points saying someone was doing some low level disruption but not adding the follow up. We only use the detention system where the students access a central detention so we know who to expect...
