[sims] SIMS Permission

Our SIMS clients fail to apply upgrades unless an administrator is logged in.

 

I have tried to run simsperm.bat but for whatever reason this has not worked.

 

I am now looking to push out the appropriate permissions via group policy.

 

Would anyone with this setup mind sharing their GPO settings being applied?

 

Clients are Windows 7 x64.

Yep, that's the plan going forward, but I need to get something in place sharpish.

 

Do you know what settings I need to include in the group policy for the client upgrade to apply successfully?

Seriously, don't both. The time it'll take to create a security group and create a GPO to allow read\write to the SIMS directory you could have SOLUS3 half setup. If you're a high school and your using things like Exams, you'll waste even more time give users more permissions.

I get what you're saying, and I do plan to install SOLUS3 in the long term, but I don't want to start messing around with our SIMS server so close to exam results day.

 

All I'm looking to do right now is apply the Summer upgrade (via SOLUS2) then run the client upgrade without having to log on to each machine as an administrator.

I wouldn't be messing around with gpo before exams results day, security isn't something that should be rushed either. You don't want to accidently give everyone local admin rights for example. There are other topics on here where people have discussed it a bit more detail then what I've said above, but I really wouldn't, for the sake of baby sitting a few key users. Which they'll hopefully appreciate more then a GPO - no offense, but that's the value added of onsite IT techs vs a outsourced IT service. Someone a lot of folks need to keep in mind as I'm seeing a lot of schools becoming Academies and rethinking there IT support model. (I digress)

Hasn't SOLUS 2 support ended now anyway. I think you're obliged to use SOLUS 3, particularly if you want support.

The first half, regarding the folders where permissions are required should be enough. I would also add permissions to %LOCALAPPDATA%\ as the process needs access to local temp folders.

You might have to adjust for your environment. We have a similar setup, and they still get prompted by UAC, and have to hit Yes to continue, but it does work.

Sorry, right you are, i'm independent, and our support ends two releases early with Summer 15 / in september!

In a GPO, Under Computer Config / Policies / Windows Settings / Security Settings:

 

All you should need to do is add a file system entry for you're teachers to have modify access rights to:

%ProgramFiles%\SIMS

%Systemroot%\sims.ini

 

and the same for a registry entry with modify for you're teachers for:

MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes

 

You'll then find that the updates run like a dream. I sincerely doubt it would be quicker to migrate to SOLUS3 than to do the above just to get it working for now if that is what you need to do.
