[Lubuntu] Need to Disable Desktop Right-Click and Taskbar Panel Right-Click

Or at least butcher the content of their menus so hard their functionality is nil for an account on these machines right here.

 

Scenario is I've got a netbook or twenty with Lubuntu on them (they don't have a hope of running much else and this distro I'm sticking with) and I have pretty much a chrome icon on the desktop and that's all I want them doing. It's locked down with gofris (kiosk-mode/deep-freeze thing that undoes changes when kiddies reboot) and there's one student account and one admin account. Proxy settings set through /etc/environment.

 

I effectively want them to just run chrome. And no, no chrome os distro works on them.

 

I've tried about every forum post google can serve up. I've edited this .rc and that .xml and nothing seems to kill off the bloomin' sods.

 

Anyone got anything else I could rm or vi into submission?

You need to edit /etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml look for the sections bound to 'mouse' and 'right click' that use the 'ShowMenu' action.

Thanks Geoff! You filled in a bit of a gap there with your pointer, so double thanks.

 

Right, I've got that file and I think I recognise enough of what's going on in there to remove the ShowDesktop bits BUT /etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml warns at the top that it gets re-created on reboot. So, opening up (as rc.xml in Geoff's path above) you'll read about copying your rc.xml into /home/%user%/.config/openbox. BUT, in THIS folder you have lubuntu-rc.xml (or at least I did running as I am lubuntu.) Edit THAT one instead (logged in as root acct, having un-done GOFRIS prior, then re-applying GOFRIS lock afterwards.)

 

Bam, right-click does NOTHING on the desktop now, just like I like. Can also (I suspect) tinker with the panel right-click and icon right-click too, which I'm off to do.

Hmmm, well this desktop business worked but I'm still struggling to get the lxpanel (like, taskbar-ey bar at the bottom of the screen for us windows folks) locked down and un-changeable for the local student acct.

 

I can get it (with GOFRIS) so that changes don't persist across sessions, as I believe could also be done by changing the permissions on ~/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/* to read-only for the kiddies BUT that's not really good for me in this case, as the laptops are going to the most disruptive and least pleasant children in the place who will use them for fiddling with settings or basically anything rather than doing work, and if these machines do anything other than open chrome beautifully it will completely fox the staff too. They can POTENTIALLY disconnect from the wifi, so can't stay as it is, although a reboot will of course sort this.

 

So, what would be good to do? In my limited wisdom, I'd guess that if this can;t be achieved with the lxpanel, is this just easily done with the gnome panel or another alternative?

Can you edit the autostart file and remove the @lxpanel line, or is that too extreme?

Thanks James. Yes not quite what I was after but something I'd also pondered.
