Getting twitchy about using TrueCrypt, anyone suggest alternatives for encrypting HDD

Hi there,

 

At one of the sites I support we're still using TrueCrypt to encrypt our External HDD backup drives so that they can be taken off-site. I'm getting increasingly paranoid about using a piece of software that is now more than a year out of support, worried that a vulnerability may compromise our data. Can anyone recommend an alternative for encrypting large ( <2TB ) external HDDs?

To be honest for the time being I'd stick with TrueCrypt. The full audit was completed only back in April, and while some issues were found there were none leading to decryption: Is TrueCrypt Audited Yet?

This was mentioned in PCPro. Apparently VeraCrypt (https://veracrypt.codeplex.com) is a fork of TrueCrypt which fixes the biggest of the potential security issues with TrueCrypt...

We use DiskCryptor here, mainly because it's fully scriptable so can be run as part of the image build task.

We moved from TrueCrypt to BitLocker back when they announced the end of TrueCrypt. All works seamlessly and has fewer steps than TrueCrypt to access your data (not that TrueCrypt was a problem, just that it had the additional mounting step).

If you do go down the Bitlocker route, and for some reason need to read the volume under Linux, have a look at HSC - Tools - Dislocker
