Install Media

I have bought a Mac Book second hand but I have no media for the OS. Can I download this as I want to reinstall onto new hard drive (SSD) and start a fresh if you get me.

 

All new to me, only used for development so not a big Mac user but a bit stuck when it comes to them.

What version of OS X do you currently have installed on the MacBook?

 

If > 10.6.8 you can download the Yosemite installer from the Mac App Store and use the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal to create a bootable USB flash drive to reinstall OS X.

Depending on the generation of macbook you might even be able to boot into the pre environment connect to wifi and let it download the right os for you

I think that will only download the version of OS X that the Mac originally came with, not the very latest.

Well yeah, but then you can upgrade to the very latest from within the OS.

Thanks for that, think that is all I need. I know when I got it form a mate he mentioned something about downloading and then updating. Will have a look.
