The question is, would you know if it did work?

 

I know it's theoretically possible, but how many people in the real world have actually killed anything by not using an anti-static wristband? Short of intentionally shuffling around on a nylon carpet and intentionally touching the chips?

Back in the big iron days, the building society where I worked had a Honeywell mini, which was about the size of two 3 drawer filing cabinets. If I touched it on a hot, dry day, the static spark would crash it.

Actually (and not trying to burst your bubble because I think this too!) I have twice. Killed 2 sticks of memory in short order with a static shock... one burned the silicone bit where I touched it! It was AWESOME!

Oh I totally agree. The only thing I've ever killed was a MoBo, and that's because I took out the GPU to tighten the water block on it and then put it back in without disconnecting it from the PSU :doh:

 

GPU still worked though, surprisingly..

 

But there's never any harm in using a strap/mat, just to be safe.

You can pretty much abuse the kit you have compared to the old days when shielding was poor and just breathing on a chip could kill it. I confess, I don't use static straps and do my work on the carpet but I still take a few precautions like touching the metal case before touching the insides (although I start wondering if this is just a ritual now).

 

And lock the door to keep the cat out. Last thing you want is a long-haired kitty rubbing up against you (once I was stroking him, hand touched his ears and the poor thing got a static shock generated from his own fur). :eek:

So what you're tell me is I can sell my anti-static stuff to my cat?

 

Have to agree on the ritual stuff tho, I do still unplug the power cable then continue to press the power button half a dozen times to discharge any stored power despite it not being a AT psu.

Yes, because capacitors inside components still hold a charge. Unplug your machine and you'll still see, for example, the motherboard power LED lit up if it has one. Gotta get rid of all that juice.

Was more referring to AT psu the power switch carry 230v rather then 3.3\5v. Did make repairing cases more "fun", still they were properly built back then so it was a rare occurrence.
