iPads : iCloud and Apps not updating through smoothwall / SWGfL - anyone else?

For the last week or so we've been unable to update apps on our school ipads on our BYOD wireless network (meru) that then goes through our smoothwall.

 

We also cannot connect to iCloud on the iPads. Error comes up saying "Verification Failed : There was an error connecting to iCloud"

 

When we try to update the apps with pending updates we click the Update button and get the swirl wait icon for a few seconds then it goes back to the Update button.

 

RM/SWGfL have made changed to the firewall but nothing has worked.

 

They've tried to get me to put in manual proxy details on the iPAD but this then loses internet connectivity completely, I suspect because the router is still set as the smoothwall perhaps?

 

Smoothwall have tried to allow the traffic from the iPad to NAT through the smoothwall device but this also breaks the internet on the test iPad.

There instructions were:

browse in your Smoothwall to the networking >> configuration >> source NAT & LLB policies page.

Make a new policy:

 

- Source IP - User Defined - The IP of your iPad

- Destination IP - User Defined - The P of the upstream proxy

- Protocol - Any

- Destination port - The port the upstream uses (or (any))

- SNAT using a link load balancing pool

- Link load balancing pool or local IP address - use the IP address of the Smoothwall that the upstream should see. Most likely the external IP of your Smoothwall.

 

Save the changes and then, use drag and drop to make the rule #1 in the policy and save.

 

Set the iPad to use the Smoothwall as its gateway and adjust its proxy settings to use the upstream proxy.

 

This again breaks all internet connectivity.

 

Pulling my hair out how to prove that the issue is with RM and not the smoothwall......

 

Ruled out a problem with our iPads as we connected one to the caretakers wifi in his cottage and it updated fine...
