[Petition] Do not enact the Snoopers' Charter.

Don't know where to post this, so i'm going to do it here.

 

Let's stop the Communications Data Bill!

 

The Snoopers' Charter, officially known as the Draft Communications Data Bill, is a Mass Surveillance law which further extends the government's ability to collect all of our communications.It is a major invasion of privacy and a threat to free speech.

The bill, which was previously blocked by the Liberal Democrats, is set to be discussed again soon which could mean until the Tories leave power and another Government repeals it, we will have some of the worst privacy and invasive mass surveillance of any nation. Just recently, on 7th May 2015, a US Court ruled that the NSA's spying on citizens was illegal; and our surveillance programs are substantially more intrusive.

 

It will force ISPs and Mobile Phone networks to keep records of all communication its customers have. This includes browsing history, emails, text messages, phone calls, social media use and instant messaging. In addition it will give further power to security agencies and law enforcement agencies to access this data for whatever they deem to be acceptable reasons.

Mass Surveillance does not stop terrorism.

 

You may think it will stop or prevent terrorism, but since 2001 in the US when the mass surveillance started, it has not been proven to be effective in stopping any specific terrorist attacks. It is not effective and is a waste of tax-payers' money.

The problem I have with this is that is can be misused. We are drifting into a society which is becoming more and more Orwellian; having everything we do monitored by the Government. As Edward Snowden said, "they’re using these capabilities to make us vulnerable to them and then saying, well, ‘I have gun pointed at your head. I’m not going to pull the trigger. Trust me.'".

The Snoopers Charter should not be passed.

 

GCHQ's current system for Mass Surveillance is already too intrusive and is killing digital privacy and free speech. Please sign this petition to show the Tory Government that we do not want to have our personal freedom invaded further and all our communications intercepted, recorded and kept for a year.

The only thing with these petitions is why change.org and not HM Government e-petitions which is official and will force it to parliament.

Not going to sign this one as much as I disagree with the proposed legislation

 

1) As @rich_tech said - it's not official and therefore the Gov't are not obligated to act upon it

2) The "letter" is one line from what I can see: "Do not enact the Communications Data Bill into law." - if the person creating the petition cannot be bothered to construct a proper letter then this is folly..

that's convenient, quick lets pass a load of controversial legislation!

There are loads of these online petitions. They are all (IMO) a waste of time, as are all petitions. A petition is usually gratefully received and then immediately put into the bin, or in the case of an online petition, the bit bucket. You need to write to your MP and let him/her know what you think about the Snoopers Charter. You can also contact like minded people in your local area via the Open Rights Group and, or course, sign their online petition.
