Hey guys,

 

My school has almost exhausted their current range and the LA have provided us with a new range of 172.18.44.1 - 172.18.47.254 that gives us 1022 hosts on the subnet of 255.255.252.0.

 

How do I go about implementing this alongside our current IP range? I want the two ranges to talk to each other.

 

I was thinking of leaving the current range in purely for servers, switches, printers etc and have the new range purely for laptops, workstations, iPads etc.

 

Any help will be much appreciated.

Just to add we have 2 x HP 5406zl switches.

Yup, they do.

 

 

You need to create a DHCP Superscope, but to be honest, unless you have more than 1022 hosts there's little point.

 

Our network can only manage 254 IP address, many of which have reservations for printers, servers etc. Therefore we have approx. 150 to dish. We had to get a new range because we'll be having a new building on site with a few labs of computers, and we need the new range to cover this. Also, we'll be getting many more new iPads and Android tablets.

 

At the moment I don't have any VLANS on the switches.

 

So what I need to do is set up a Superscope? What about on the switches - anything need doing on there?

I understand, but have your LA allowed you to use both scopes, or want you to migrate everything to the new scope?

In theory, yes. However, I want to be able to specify what devices get IP addresses from the two ranges I desire.

 

The only way to achieve that is either manual DHCP reservations or VLANs.

not sure what your trying to achieve other than needless complexity id just move all the servers/switches into the 172.18.47.xx range use the 44/45/46 for client devices and use your existing range as either a test network or as its entirely logically separated for byod so they cant get to your servers

we have 3 ranges.

1 is for management - so switches servers printers.

ranges 2 & 3 are assigned to our DHCP for the clients to pick up so the DHCP scope include our xxx.xxx.100.xxx xxx.xxx.101.xxx

I tend to give management, printers, photocopiers, AP's, and NAS static ips and exclude them and some extra from range the rest is up for grabs.

We have a number of seperate vlans:

 

Management (for Switches)

Printers

Wireless

Servers

Clients

Laptops

Access Control

 

You'll need to create the vlan on the core, dhcp scopes on DC, ip helpers on the vlans etc

Hi Chuckster

 

My suggestions to have a proper IP range

 

a. Create VLANs for every bit i.e Staff, Student (separate it by Grade level, if possible), Guest, Events, IP Phones, Server, Management, CCTV, Access Control. Your printers can be on the same VLAN as the Students computers, staff computers. This would help to create Access Policies for every VLAN i.e Staff at the Primary School with the IP range 10.5.16.x will be able to get facebook access between 10AM-11AM during recess. This won't be the case if a staff in the Senior school is present as ACL (access control lists) is separated.

b. Start with a range that is sustainable with /23 per subnet

c. See how many devices would be connecting at a given time and also try to simulate the number of devices connecting in 5 years time. Always remember students or staff will have a minimum of 2 devices. Multiple that to the staff/student having access

d. Don't go for super scope

e. Don't go for anything below /23, a worst case scenario maximum /22. Anything about this is going to create a massive broadcast storm on the network

f. Don't go with separating IP scopes. Make them under one scope i.e don't put 172.x.x.x with another range of 10.x.x.x. Keep it constant, less headaches

g. When going with /23, first 25 IP should be reserved for various static IP assignments i.e a separate Static IP Printers, Principal etc

h. Make sure and this is the most important, Bonjour addressing if using iPads. Because they don't cross over VLANs/subnets, you need to either put a Bonjour Gateway in between to pass traffic so Students on a particular VLAN can see Airplay devices of Staff on another VLAN.

I. Like another posts says, have 2 DHCP servers and mention them on the Core, Distribution switches, so if 1 DHCP server, other still addresses it.
