Anyone Bought a Freeview Box Recently?

I need one for my daughter's room, looked at a few cheap ones in Asda and stuff in passing but then I started looking at ones like this

 

HDMÄ° Freeview Receiver & RECORDER for DIGITAL TV Switchover Set Top Digi Box | eBay

 

Meaning in theory she can record the odd thing as well as playback the odd backed up movie from usb.

 

Or for a little more

Wondered if anyone had bought something like this?

I had a HDR style one (admittedly a expensive one) before I had Virgin, but main problem I found is I then had to keep flicking over to smart-TV for catchup etc.

 

I guess depending on what she wants to watch would something like NowTV etc be better option? For streaming/catchup?

She has never had a TV in her room so she doesnt know what she wants! Between her and her sister they share an xbox that they use to iPlayer catchup plus she users her iPhone too.

 

I could just buy a £10 freeview box (the 10 year old Sony she has needs a box) and be done with it, but if I am getting something wondering if it's worth spending a little extra to give her the options to record.

Haven't had a dedicated freeview box in years, but Humax were the best around and they still seem to get excellent reviews, so I'd keep an eye out for something by them if you're going the DVR route

I would recommend looking at a Youview box. Anything you have recorded or that has been shown in the last week, on a channel that has a catchup service, is accessed directly from the guide. The search facility is good. Programmes recorded over a week ago can be easily accessed from the menu. you can also access Netflix and now tv.

I always went with Humax. Never had problems. They used to be a bit more expensive, but was worth it.

I wouldnt the one I have is slow (you press the button to play a recording and have time to think did that do anything before it gives any indication its recognised the input) clunky (the interface isn't great scrolling round between options is slow and there is no direct access to recording but there is to search and a few other things. It is also terriblr at remembering series links it regularly forgets for example the simpsons on ch4hd which has been on at 6-6:30 for as long as i can remember)and prone to crashing if its on anything but max power saving meaning that you can literally make a sandwich while it boots up (and this is the 2nd box ive had both identically poor). Its not the hardware as I had a humax box with the same hardware before it it it was vastly better in every way except for catchup apps

I have had periods where mine has been slow but the latest updates have been fine. I cannot comment on the latest hardware as I have 2 going on 3 year old one from BT. Have not had any issues with it recently.
