Magic triangle with Yosemite

I posted here last year about updating our mac suite to Mavericks & held off due to the ACL permission bug...The music department want to get these updated so that they can use the new garage band app, so I'm wondering is this going to open up a world of pain, or have all the bugs been sorted with Yosemite? Will WGM still work? (i haven't moved onto profile manager, maybe i should) Any thing I should look out for. Thanks

All bugs? No. We're currently getting an odd black screen issue when waking, and sometimes Garageband 10 refuses to load at all (that may just be GB!). It's not bad overall. WGM still works, just. We've found it won't push proxy settings now, which is odd. We have to set them on the Macs themselves.

 

It's slooooooow running from HDD, much more so than Snow Leopard (our only other OS X version now). SSDs help massively. 10.10.4 allows you to enable TRIM via the trimforce command for non-OEM SSDs.

Bugs are very much still there and Workgroup Manager is dead and buried, you should be using Profile Manager.

 

I would consider a brand new approach as there will dwindling support from Apple for AD Binded Network based accounts from now on, I've spotted that an ASE has posted a technical update on this subject, have a read very interesting...

Problem is, Profile Manager sucks big time for managing OS X clients IMO. WGM does still work - it's more undead than dead!

This is what I found when first setting them up, I had little experience of Macs so had to teach myself, WGM made sense as i'm used to working with AD/GP. However reading that tech update is seems that the way to go would be to unbind them & use cloud storage to store their files, they are only used in the music department here & at the moment they are saving most work to a shared drive, so other than the students being able to grab their home folders AD binding isn't really necessary going forward.

Do you have any plans to use Logic, Pro Tools, Final Cut etc, perhaps in the future? With those, the ability to store files locally too is pretty much essential, even if it's just as a holding area before moving them to network storage. Basically, you'll get performance issues if you try to work over the network with those programs. However, Garageband play nicely.

Just garage band, we have a little recording studio set up where they use Logic but this is on a mac that I keep off the network.
