Diskpart says “access denied,” refuses to start

When I try to run Diskpart, it says, “access denied,” and refuses to start.

 

I need it to re-enable write access on a backup drive that somehow got set to read only.

 

Any ideas on how to get Diskpart working, or is there another way to get the job done?

 

I’m running as an administrator on Windows 8.1, 64-bit.

You can try using Disk Part from the WinRE image, if the OS won't allow you. Using an Administrative Command Prompt type:

 

shutdown /r /o /f /t 00

 

That will reboot into Advanced Startup where you can select Troubleshooting, Advanced then Command Prompt. It may prompt for a password.

Even logged in as administrator, 8.1 run the command prompt as a restricted user unless you right-click on the shortcut on the Start Screen and select Run as Administrator.

When you run DiskPart from a standard Command Prompt it will automatically open an elevated Command Prompt for you after you click the Yes button on the UAC prompt. I just tried it myself.

Hmmm, not got 8.1 at home to confirm but you're usually right! Stumped then. Is the machine on a domain, and a Computer setting in GP is set to restrict the command prompt?
