GREED Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 So staff would need another account/login? If it's free with those with SLG would it not have made sense to get the app to sign in using the SLG login?? It's not like your staff already have a login they use every day... say like their AD username and password... *cough* We still use 3rd party software for taking registers in the field, then updates SIMS when re-connects to the Wi-Fi. SIMS products are always released too early before testing with Bugs/limitations. Which software would that be out of interest? How much have you had a look at TeacherApp so far?
Jonah Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Our view (right or wrong) was that everybody has an email account from MS or Google and that this was the right option to offer. There were technical reasons too for not using the SIMS login I believe but can't recall what they were. Not guaranteed - lot's of people will use their ISP e-mail (Sky, Virign, Bt, etc) It's not like your staff already have a login they use every day... say like their AD username and password... Our opinion as well, seems a massive oversight not to at least offer this as an option - I'd expect you can guarantee pretty much more secondary schools will have AD usernames/passwords than staff MS/Google e-mails.

They are lagging behind in that thought process... others have gone there and is a great success story...
howartp Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I'm not defending Capita's stance on this, but both Google and O365 support AD sync of accounts or passwords, so it would be possible - even if you don't use either of them currently - to claim your free O365 school's account and literally only use it for SIMS auth. Yes it would be a pain, but it would work to avoid separate logins.

I think the points being made is it is a mammoth task to setup and migrate to O365 just for that Facility... if a school is not using it currently...
howartp Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I never said migrate - you don't have to use any of it, just (!) setup the AD sync of all your accounts and off you go with SIMS
matt40k Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I think the points being made is it is a mammoth task to setup and migrate to O365 just for that Facility... if a school is not using it currently... It might be a lot of work and you may (be forced to) set it up for SIMS, but it isn't just SIMS that you can use it for, just look at what you get with Office 365, look at the amount of apps they have in the marketplace - Microsoft Azure Marketplace - Active Directory applications Then add the fact its a lot more secure then SIMS SQL logins, you can enable proper two factor authentication with only a few clicks and if we're being honest, we all trust Microsoft more then Capita or any other third party that builds some sort of authentication into an app. I suspect like all things difficult, they'll get easier as time goes on. I've heard rumors that Capita and Microsoft might be working on something to help with the provisioning of Office 365 - can't imagine that'll be free however. 1
GREED Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Once again they would be late to the party then... others are already doing just that and probably cheaper too!!
matt40k Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 You have to admit, the number of enquires goes up after Capita release a similar product/service and it doesn't normally translate into capita sales. Suspect if they do, SalamanderSoft would be a good company to invest in.

matt40k Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Eh? You mean folks who aren't in SIMS? Don't you remember having to add support staff to sims for the workforce census. I get what you mean about locking in, but you have to have a system that holds all your staff/students and your MIS makes sense. So you might have a few folks who wouldn't normally be in SIMS, in SIMS, but it isn't the end of the world. If you mean in terms of using the auth for other products, do you not understand the adfs idea? Adfs is your AD, extended into the cloud so you can use it across loads of applications, not just Microsoft. Look at that marketplace link above, hundreds of pages of apps which can be enabled in a few clicks. Want proper dual fact, again, another few clicks which can be definable if they are on or off prem. So if your at school using a school device, it just passes your login, if your off prem, say on a school trip, you enter your user/pass, then do the dual factor, such as answering a call and pressing hash.
GREED Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 (edited) @GREED have you left Group Call or something? There is a report button if you think I've broken rules, Phil. Feel free to use it. I am still working for Groupcall, always nice to remind the community! A year last week actually, still going strong! I don't believe I have mentioned any product by us or anyone else mind! Just making a point or two. Edited July 19, 2015 by GREED

Many of the big educational products are not tied into ADFS. Many are looking for assistance to hook up to a single sign on. Looking at the hundreds of smaller suppliers who are popping up all over the place with innovative ideas!
matt40k Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I think Phil is trying to goat you into saying GroupCall is looking at the identity management marketplace. Many of the big educational products are not tied into ADFS. Many are looking for assistance to hook up to a single sign on. Looking at the hundreds of smaller suppliers who are popping up all over the place with innovative ideas! You didn't look at the Azure AD marketplace did you? You don't need to tie you app into ADFS, case and point - Microsoft Azure Marketplace Yes, that's right, you can use your local AD login to log into Google Apps as well as Facebook, Twitter, Moodle, literally thousands of services which just a few clicks. SSO with just a few clicks, no extra licensing costs.

I do believe this is what you are referring to? https://sis.microsoft.com/ This is not a Capita thing - it is an Open Standard being worked on by Microsoft with all the MIS providers. As we were mentioned - yes, Salamander can be used for Groups and Users management in both Office 365 and Google Apps environments. 1
