I tend to only buy alpha/beta/early access games on the recommendation of my friends who have taken the plunge. I'm very rarely the first to buy something. It doesn't fully protect me from playing a game and thinking 'This is a bit m'eh' (H1Z1 being a good example..) but overall I'd like to think I pee away less money than others
