Hi,

I am just wondering what technical work would need to be carried out from a school technicians point of view when changing the ISP for the school?

Thanks

Depending on what equipment you look after - changing firewall routes, publishing rules, external DNS, updating any records on external services that are locked by IP...

It's kind of a big question..

If you are keeping your firewall it will be just a case of swapping over IP for the new connection, pointing services at the new IP address and any changes where the old address may exist and any VPN tunnels you have. Also your clients if they have a VPN on them if not done via name will need the IP address changing.

For you, I would imagine very little.

When we changed ISP it was the responsibility of the new provider to ensure the relevant changes were made, or at least advise us exactly on what we had to do and when. They're doing this on a daily basis so what is a daunting task to us, is a piece of cake for them.

We recently been through this. Went live last Thursday..

All of the above mainly.. Plus we had to re-ip the network. Good experience.. Habing good documentation is key. It's. Important to provide answers quickly without having to look. Our transitkon was very smooth I have to say. No loss we run them side by side for about ten mins and then switched off the la connection.

We use a sophos utm appliance so it made things loads easier. I imagine if your firewall or dns was managed by someone else you might have issues. For us, faultless.

Thanks so much to all of you for your detailed replies.

We have third line support from an IT company they have quoted for the work to be done at 4 grand, obviously you dont know the complexity of the network or other factors but as a guess would you say this is reasonable?
