System Image Utility - Different OS X Versions

Looking for some confirmation on an issue I am having, we are running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 and are in the process of updating our Macs to Yosemite, thought I would create a Boot Install Image using System Image Utility.

 

Plugged in iMac with Yosemite connected via Thunderbolt, booted it up in Thunderbolt mode. Can see the Thunderbolt disk on the server, when loading System Image Utility, I am getting the message "No valid source volumes were found".

 

I am starting to think this is a compatibility issue with the OS X on the server and Yosemite.

If you're trying to take an image of Yosemite with the SIU that came with Snow Leopard then yes, that won't work. You need the version of SIU that comes with Yoesmite Server

Thanks for confirming this, I possibly see why this would be the case but surely a boot disk image can be made regardless of what OS is it, feels like vendor lock in to me.

Personally I wouldn't go near Apple's SUI Tools and go with Deploy Studio instead, you will still need Server App v4.0 though.
