johnwheatley Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Hi there I have three students in the school that cannot see any desktop icons after login. They get the wallpaper, their shared docs folder and the students Shared folder. tried GPupdate /sync. but no go. Folder redirection is Okay. cleared all profiles off PC including ones stuck in reg. It can't be machine specific as other users on same PC pick up desktop icons. given them new profile - no go. yet they go to any PC and do not get desktop icons or folders. What can this possibly be down to? many thanks ...
Steve21 Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 How are you giving them the shortcuts? Is it redirected to shared server? locally off machines etc? Steve
Andie Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 There are user settings for hiding desktop icons. Eg. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc940424.aspx . Is it possible they have a separate user policy in GP?
johnwheatley Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 That has given me a clue. However, being newish to GP where would I look for the user settings. On the left hand tree I can't find names under users... Many thanks John
johnwheatley Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 Shortcuts are in a share and pionted to in GP: \\dc1\desktop$\students
witch Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 I have had the same issue several times and in the end I just recreated the user and imported their docs. That worked, and saved time. I would like to know what is going on though- must be SOMETHING in the profile!
johnwheatley Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 Yep done that. Now user gets local machine icons and generic windows wallpaper. No student icons or student wallpaper.
witch Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Did you delete the old user - not just docs but appdata etc before creating the new one? (Saving the docs somewhere else of course) I ask because my system seems to retain appdata Can you create a new account with a slightly different username so it can't pick up anything already there?
johnwheatley Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 OK here's the weird thing. Recreated the students account using his name but adding the number 2 at the end of his name and logon name. Still get local icons and local wallpaper. If I logon the same PC with a different students name - everything is fine.
johnwheatley Posted June 12, 2015 Author Posted June 12, 2015 Thank you all! Sorted. Created new user and all is now working fine. For some reason the profile had become corrupted and stuck with that user. Creating new user with a number 2 on the end of his user name worked. Just have to figure out why profile had become unstable... Many thanks John
witch Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 But you said you had created the account and added 2 and it didn't work? As for trying to find out why - good luck with that - I get approx. 3 a week - mostly profile deletion works but every now and again I have to recreate the user.
johnwheatley Posted June 12, 2015 Author Posted June 12, 2015 I forgot to add the profile path in AD 1
