Staff remote access

Just wondering on your thoughts. Staff would like to be able to access the school network from home. How would you do it?

 

I'm thinking:

Remote desktop server - I'd run some virtual machines on the server and staff could log into them

or

VPN - not sure if the council will let me do this

or

Logmein (or equivalent) - to a select number of computers

 

All of these seem to be a bit....clunky. Advice?

If its a small school you can setup remote desktop server without the need for any Virtual machines. The staff connect to the server and get a virtual desktop created by the server rather than a full blown VM.

 

Install remote desktop service

Install remote Gateway

Install remote licence server

Hand out connection to staff.

What do they actually want to access if it is things as SIMS etc. I have no idea what you can use but if it is just things such as staff share etc. then look at Foldr especially if you are planning on getting iPads etc.

We use Remote Desktop Web Access.

It isn't a full-blown desktop, we select the applications staff can access. Works great here.

I've got it set up here that the admin staff can use a VPN to remote desktop in to their own computer in the school, obviously if they are planning to connect remotely they need to either leave their PC on or get someone here to turn it on for them. It's not ideal but it does mean they get a familiar user experience because it's as though they were sat at their own desk in school.

All staff usually take home their laptops and work via offline files (I hate offline files!)

Essentially they would really only need shared drives as all the programs would be installed on their laptops. However, if using remote desktop (or something similar) they won't be bottlenecked by large files and slow internet connections.
