Noise from new Dell system

My brother, who is 100 miles away, has just bought a new Dell pc. When it boots up it makes a real racket which appears to be coming from the cpu fan. If he restarts the computer it persists. If he shuts down, removes power completely and then restarts it is quiet!!!

He would have to speak to dell first to ensure that is ok because if something goes totally wrong with the system it invalidates his warranty etc. If he has cover or w/e which he should for a certain period its better to call dell and get them to come out and fix it that way if they knacker it up its not your fault and they will cover it.

He's taken the side cover off which presumably is ok as he would need to do that to fit cards. Why would it be ok when it's cold-booted? I'll tell him to give Dell a ring.

yeah better safe then sorry If they say f*ck off then he can either have a go at them or tell them that he will try and fix it but its there responsibility if it goes wrong.

 

Prolly easier just to tell them to swap the whole thing out cos otherwise its just a hassle, may of been knocked hard during delivery.

I think he is just p*ssed because he was looking forward to getting his new toy and it's unlikely anything will happen before Xmas now.

Fauly CPU temperature/speed sensor of some kind? Our new Dells all make a loud revving sound for a couple of seconds when they start up, then quieten down when the power management stuff kicks in and the fan figures out the speed it needs to be running at. Sounds like your brother's PC isn't doing this sensing stage correctly. He could try hitting it...

He should be fine taking the side cover off. I've had to ring Dell and HP quite a few times, and they always say it doesn't void the warranty to have a poke around inside.
