Redirecting My Documents

We have Server 2003 and XP Pro clients, i am trying to redirect My Documents in Group Policy to point to \\servername\users$\intake 07\%username%

 

I changed the configuration to enable this logged on worked a treat. Logged on the second time and even now go to file open in Word and i go straight to the desktop. I cant understand it at all.

 

Can anyone give me some help/advice im going mad!!!!!!!

I found that Word 2000 didn't like certain My Docs redirections. Unfortunately, due to over clocking, my brain is fried and I can't remember exactly how I fixed it. It was one of these, I think:

- A space in the path (between intake and 07).

- Not having access to all levels above %username%. (I.e. you have RW access to the userfolder but can't browse intake 07. You need to add read/traverse access). For troubleshooting, try giving the user full access to all of the above to see if it makes a difference, then bolt it down after.

- The path being too long (don't think it was that!.)

Sorry I can't be more specific, but there's a few things to try.

 

Don't know why it would work once then not again. GP needs a couple of logons to fully refresh, perhaps another setting is playing tricks?

On our network, we have a drive H:\ mapped as the home drive, and we re-direct my document to point to H:\ on the machine, and not the complete UNC path.

 

This works a treat for us, never fails.

It worked great then logged off then back on and now it dont work at all. :-(

I find it's tidier to use their AD accounts to map a drive letter to their home directory (like N:\) and then redirect My Documents to that drive letter.

 

It's also worth checking Event Log to see whether the policy is being successfully applied or whether it's failing to be applied for some reason.

How do you get My Documents to poit to H: or N:?

 

When I try to do this (using GPO editor) it always gets replaced by the current value of H:

eg. I put H:\My Documents

then it saves \\svr-1\users$\dbrown\My Documents)

@dbrown - point the redirection or AD home folder too:

 

\\svr-1\users$\%username%\My Documents
