Smoothwall Question

We have just had SM installed and love it

 

I have one question i want to ask her before i goto smooth wall support

 

We have several ipads that staff use and are on our wifi but when we look at the logs it only shows the IP of the device and not the name

 

The teachers do not need to authenticate on to filter it is all ready setup up to allow them on.

Is there any way we can setup smoothwall so it shows the device name and not just ip or do we need to authenticate the users to get that info.

I would imagine they would need to authenticate as at our school the iPads just come up as 'mobile device'

I'm pretty sure if you manage the iPads properly you can set the authenticate details however each iPad would need a log in?

 

Why do you want to know the name of the iPad?

Hi there,

 

Providing you have fully working reverse DNS, try browsing to the advanced web proxy settings in your GUI (web proxy >> web proxy >> settings >> advanced) and switch on the "enabling client hostname logging" option.

 

Then, save and restart and see if this helps.

 

It'll definitely put the information in the raw log files, not sure off the top of my head if it shows in the GUI though!

 

The settings off by default as it requires solid DNS and this can't always be guaranteed and if this is not the case, browsing will get VERY slow....
